Gladys Greenwood’s Docs Gladys Greenwood – Facts, Figures and Speculation

27.06.1909
Gladys Greenwood is born in Scarborugh as daughter of Florence Hey, a charwoman. Florence is separated from husband Robert Greenwood, who is living in Stanningley. Gladys had a brother, who however, is living with the father. Arguably Gladys was an illegitimate child.

According to the 1911 census, they are living in two rooms at 9, North Terrace Gardens, Scarborough. Gladys is 9 months old.

Her father Robert passes away in January 1920 at 5 Vernon Place, Stanningley.

Her mother Florence passes away on 2nd October 1922 , 58 Healds Road, Dewsbury, West Yorkshire. This is the site of Dewsbury Workhouse. Whether Florence was an inmate, or whether she had been there for treatment is unclear.

Cause of death: Vascular Heart Disease and Dropsy.

Gladys is 13 years old, and an orphan. She moves in apparently with a cousin of her mothers, sarah wood and her husband Harry. At the time of her wedding she is living at 2, Back Cross Park Street, Batley.

29.09.1928
Gladys marries Thomas Scott at St. Saviours Church, Brownhill. Witnesses being Harry Wood and Harry Preston.

It is said that Gladys had no family at the wedding.

They have two children. Jack, born 23.03.1929 and Jean, born 24.09.1931 at 30 Birch Street, Batley, West Yorkshire, England. Jean passed away at the age of 5 months on 19.02.1932 in Batley, West Yorkshire, England. She is buried in an unmarked grave in Batley Cemetery

The story that has been handed down is that Thomas was a miner in Batley, and was working nights. One night, it is said, the machines broke down and all the men were sent home. Thomas returned to find his wife in bed with another man. Whereupon he took the two children and returned to his parents.

27.02.1933
Gladys is divorced from Thomas on the grounds of adultery. Co defendant was a person called Woodhead.

At this point Gladys dissappears for some time. It has been said that her son Jack met up with her during a holiday at Butlins, but no details are known. The truth of this is highly contentious. It has also been told that Jack came home one day after school while he was very young and said to Laura, “You are really my mother, aren’t you?”

27.10.1942
Gladys remarries. Her husband is Ronald Marshall, a soldier.

She has added a second forname “Patricia” and is forthwith known to the family as Pat. She has also taken one year from her age, according to the marriage certificate, she was born in 1910, not 1909

Ronald takes his new bride to Harlow, in Essex, where they lived until Gladys death in 1974. They have at least two sons, Ron and Tony. Ron married Sonia Pinder and apparently had two children with her.
